With this blog post, we wanted to shine a light on some of Hack24's unsung heroes: the caterers from Truffle Catering! They work tirelessly all weekend to provide food for over 150 people, and delicious food it is too. They're back this year for their third Hack24, and we chatted to Faye and her team about food and Hack24.
How long has Truffle been in business? Have you always been a caterer?
Truffle has been providing catering services for 9 years now. I always knew I wanted to do something with food after having my one and only 'Nigella Moment' when I first got married and thought I should know how to cook. I trained to be a chef at college part time over 3 years. At that time I was in IT Outsourcing for many [many] years but 15+ years later decided to spend more time doing what I loved and not sitting on aeroplanes!
It turned out to be the best thing I ever did. I was fortunate enough to know some members of the team beforehand who had studied hospitality at catering college and could steer the front of house in the right direction. The rest of the team just fell into place over time and (without sounding too sickly) together everyone makes it the success it is.
This will be your third year catering for Hack24. How difficult is it catering for so many people all weekend?
One of the difficulties of catering for large quantities over a weekend is just constantly preparing the next course, be it teas and coffees , or the next meal and trying to meet everyone's needs.

What's the best bit about your job?
I would say the best bit is the food being presented at the start of each session and the lovely comments from all the guests.

Knowing you have done a good job and then sitting down with the team at the end of the day having something to eat and opening something fizzy to drink.
What's your favourite meal to cook? Least favourite?!
It's difficult to choose a favourite dish as we change our menu regularly. I personally love comfort food with a twist. Our canapes are really interesting too & I like the fiddly bits. On a downside, everyone raves about our butternut squash & feta salad but peeling all those squashes is like a war zone!
Favourite foods to cook is anything new – ideally developing it from scratch or reworking an old favourite. Least favourite?… Anything boring!! Someone else has to take over then in case I lose focus.
The hot chocolate was the surprise hit of Hack24 2017. Why is it SO GOOD?!
We get Julie to taste test anything Chocolate as it happens to be her special skill in life. If it's bad for you and she likes it, we know we are onto a winner!
The hot chocolate was absolutely amazing last year. It's also mega expensive; funny that!
